CHARACTER: CANON SECTION
NAME: Cheria Barnes
AGE: 18
CANON: Tales of Graces

CANON HISTORY:
CANON PERSONALITY: Cheria is an exceptionally kind person. This is her strongest character trait, and something that informs all of her actions. She cares deeply about the people that she considers friends or family, and often puts herself in a caretaker position for her loved ones. During the game, we see her assume a motherly role for the other characters in the party. She asks them how they're doing, checks on them when they're having difficulties, and makes sure that they are fed, comfortable, and healthy. In fact, this is so prevalent that other characters even joke about it to each other!

But, part of what makes her amazing is that she not only cares for her friends, but she cares just as much for every random stranger that she meets. Through her young adult life, she has dedicated her time and energy to healing the sick and assisting the downtrodden during times of war and crisis. She's that incredibly combination of a realist, and a bleeding heart. She cares deeply for people, and cannot stand to see them suffering. But she's the rare individual who will not only see injustice in the world, but she will tirelessly work to fight against it. All of this points towards Cheria just being a person who is truly kind-- she's not in charity work for glory, honor, or respect-- she just has a genuine interest and care for all the people of this earth.

But here's the funny thing about her, while there is no dispute that Cheria is kind, she isn't always very nice. One could joke that this is the other side of the coin of her motherly nature. Yes, she will make sure that you are fed, clothed, and comfortable-- but if you try to turn down her offer she will insist to the point of nagging. She will heal your wounds unconditionally, then lecture you for several minutes about how reckless you were. Cheria is generally an honest person, and even more so with her friends and family. She holds herself to very high standards, and as a result tends to project those standards onto others as well.

This is especially true for other adults, or people whom she thinks should know better. We see her be more forgiving to younger characters, like Sophie. In the game, when Sophie makes a mistake, Cheria will gently chide her and give her advice for how to approach the situation next time. But in various scenes and skits when the adults of the party (like the Captain or Pascal) do something that she considers to be immoral, foolish, or out of line? She will call them out to their face, and give them a hard time until they apologize. While this can be irritating for her friends, the good thing about Cheria's upfront nature is that disputes are resolved in-the-moment, and resentment is not given time to build. So while she can be easily frustrated with friends, she is rarely truly mad at them.

But this doesn't mean that Cheria never gets mad. We've seen that if not given closure to a dispute, Cheria will definitely carry a grudge. As a child, she tries to comfort her friend Asbel after he lost his friends and brother. She foolishly tells him that she will try to fill the void that they left behind. Asbel calls her out on the pretentious nature of this statement, and she apologizes and pleads for him to stay. He says that he will, but the next day he runs away from home. This hurts Cheria to her core, Asbel never reaches out to her to resume contact, and essentially abandons his home and her. Hurt turns to anger, and when Cheria sees Asbel again years later she is purposefully standoff-ish, overly critical, and cold towards him. True anger brings out Cheria's more catty nature. She will be passive aggressive, rude, and can hold onto that anger for literal years.

When she gets like this, Cheria will not be the first one to break and she will be obnoxiously stubborn. Asbel is forced to be the one to broach the subject first. He calls her out on her behavior towards him, and only then does she reveal the truth behind her feelings. She starts to cry as she explains, and as the anger crumbles away it reveals the pain and loneliness that she was hiding. As with most people in this world, Cheria's anger is a front because she doesn't want to appear weak in front of others. After their conversation finishes with Asbel's genuine apology, Sophie asks them if their fight is over. Cheria replies that it is indeed over, and she means that one hundred percent. If someone apologizes to her, Cheria will forgive them. Problems generally only arise when she is not given the means or method of dealing with the issue at hand.

Now, you may have noticed with that last session, I called Cheria passive aggressive. That may seem to be at odds with the fact that I earlier referred to her as honest. But it's true-- Cheria is both. In most aspects of life she is honest, upfront, and genuine. There are only two real exceptions to this. The first is when she's angry, which we already discussed. The other time is when she's in love.

To be frank, Cheria is terrible at romance. She is the worst combination of hopeless romantic and slightly insecure. In most areas of her life, Cheria is incredibly practical. She thinks about the details and logistics of situations, she views situations with realistic understanding of the world and its complexities, and is generally the straight man in the crew of oddball cast members in Tales of Graces. The one exception to this is in regards to romance. You can tell that Cheria holds in her heart a dream of fairy tale romance. She has been in love with someone for her entire life, and she desperately wants him to make the first move. We see through the games that she has slight insecurities, especially in regards to her appearance. On top of that, her entire childhood is riddled with memories of desperately wanting to be around Asbel, and him running away from her. She has this fear that he doesn't love her the way she loves him, and it paralyzes her. So as a result she never makes the first move on Asbel, and in return he is incredibly dense and doesn't realize her affection. Eventually with time and growth from Asbel they are able to make it work, but it is a long and awkward journey that could have been avoided if Cheria wasn't so stubborn about being inactive.

But, people are complicated. And the good thing is, in the realm of everything outside of romance? Cheria is as far from timid as you can get. Through the game she is willing to do things like sneak into an enemy army camp to help save her hometown, start an aide organization to bring relief to those impacted by war, and when they enter a town with hurt citizens Cheria will go straight to their side. She is hard-working, brave, and determined to be a force for good in this world. She is at her best when she is helping others, and that is what she feels she is meant to do.

A big part of that has to do with Cheria's childhood. When she was a young girl she had a weak constitution, and was often sick. It was hard for her to play with the other children, and the adults in her life scolded her friends for "pushing her too hard". As a result, Cheria was often left behind as her friends went off on adventures. It was until she reached adolescence that Cheria was able to surpass the sickness of her childhood. In addition, she also received magical healing powers. The combination of these things seemed to inspire her, and she wants to make sure no child ever has to feel like she did in her youth. When you combine her dream of helping people with the fact that there are always hurt people in the world who need help-- as you can imagine that there is little downtime in Cheria's life.

She seems to be the kind of person who always wants to be useful. If she's not out working with the sick, she's taking care of her friends at home, or doing some sort of household chore that will create a better living environment for others. We never see her engaging in "me" time, and she finds little appeal in sitting around doing nothing. If she can be doing something useful? Then that's what she wants to be doing.

And at the end of the day, that's Cheria. Like most humans, a beautiful mess of contradictions. Endlessly kind, but not always the nicest person. Loving and forgiving, but sometimes judgmental. Helpful, hardworking, determined, and utterly helpless when it comes to love. Practical and realistic, but still with a spark of fantasy in her heart and the ability to see the best in people.

SKILLS/ABILITIES:

CHARACTER: AU SECTION
AU NAME: Charity Barnes
AU AGE: 21
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES: Her hair is a dull reddish brown, in contrast to her pink cannon hair color. In addition, her clothing choices are more... normal. She dresses as your standard young adult woman versus a ribbon-obsessed RPG character.

AU HISTORY: Charity's mother was a young adventurous woman with eyes on the stars and wanderlust in her heart. At sixteen she ran away from her childhood home of Recolle with her handsome and "edgy" boyfriend. Her parents had never approved of his noisy motercycle and devil-may-care attitude, and told her that she had to stop seeing him. But one day their daughter just... didn't come home. Wrecked with worry, they didn't see her again for eighteen months. When she turned up again on their doorstep she had only weeks left before she would give birth, and a broken heart. Her parents accepted her back with open arms, but her constitution was frail and there was little they could do to restore her will to live.

She survived just long enough to give birth to a daughter, but passed away a few hours afterwards. The formally adoped Charity and raised her as their own. Luckily, Charity flourished in the environment that her mother found so stifling. While her mother chafed under the strict supervision of her parents, Charity had a much easier time. She was an obediant child, and grew into a responsible adult that loved her Grandparents with all her heart.

Charity grew up in Recolle, in a modest three bedroom apartment owned by her Grandparents. Her Grandpa made a comfortable living for his family as the financial manager of an old college friend. He had a sharp mind for finances, and made his friend very wealthy. Luckily, it was a job that her Grandpa could continue to perform even as he grew past retirement age. He was able to make enough to support his family, and save away any excess money for Charity's education.

Charity suffered from the same frail constitution as her mother, and because of this her Grandparents were always attentive to her needs. She spent a lot of time as a young girl home sick from school, but she was diligent enough as a child to keep up with her homework. As she grew older, she learned ways to cope and avoid potentially problematic situations, but it was decided that she should avoid overly stressful or taxing environments.

Despite minor health issues, with enough wealth to make ends meet, Charity was lucky enough to live a comfortable life in a loving home. She dilligently applied herself at school, and served on the Student Council all through middle school and high school. People always commented that she was mature for her age, and she excelled at helping her peers stay orginized and throw class events.

When she graduated high school, she continued on to Recolle's local college so that she could continue to live with her Grandparents. As she grew older, more and more household responsibilities fell to her, and she did all she could to give back to the wonderful couple that had raised her. Her Grandma passed away two years ago (when Charity was 19) and she has since put even more of her time and energy into caring for the Grandpa.

Now, she divides her time between school (she's studying to be a Nurse), caring for her Grandpa, voulenteering at a local Boys and Girls club in her neighborhood, and working night shifts as a voulenteer EMT.
AU PERSONALITY: Charity is largely the same as Cheria, with only slight differences thanks to the modern environment of Recolle.

Confidence: As a child, Cheria was always left behind by her rambunctious friends. This led to her lacking a certain amount of confidence in certain social situations. However, with the convenience of modern life and medicine, Charity was much less impacted by her childhood illness. While she still gets sick easily if she's not careful, it's something she can manage, and she was still able to develop healthy friendships at a young age. This leads to her being generally more confident than Cheria in social situations.

Education: In Tales of Graces, Hubert is the "book worm" of the group. While Cheria never appears dumb, she isn't the brains of the operation either. But, in modern day, it is expected that if a person is pursuing a medical career, they have to be pretty smart. So, because this is her passion, Charity put more focus on studying and learning than Cheria did in cannon. She's still no straight A genius, but she is a student who consistantly performs well, and studies hard.

Romance: The biggest change from cannon comes from Cheria not growing up with Asbel. Her love for Asbel is a core part of her role in cannon, and arguabally a cornerstone of her actions in-game. However, in Recolle? She never had such a love. While she is still a hopeless romantic in her own way (she loves old-fashioned black and white Hollywood, and the passionate romances of those times), she won't have any one crush that she is as head-over-heels for. She also has a bit more confidence when it comes to dating, as she doesn't need to grapple with the fear of "oh god, the love of my life doesn't love me, aaaaah".

Caretaker: In cannon, Cheria's relationship with Sophie kickstarts a maternal instinct in her. She's always been good with kids, and cares about him, but her relationship with Sophie is very special and intimate. Charity has never had a relationship quite like that, so when she first thinks of "caring for someone", her mind immediately goes towards caring for the elderly (due to her close relationship with her grandparents). She still loves kids and teens, but ultimately her goal as a nurse is to provide care for the elderly, which is not as huge a concern to her in cannon.
